❗📖 AGAINST TECH OLIGARCHY Launches in NYC

JS Tan (HackNY 15’) is launching his new book AGAINST TECH OLIGARCHY in NYC! The book recounts the rise of tech worker activism, why workers came together to challenge the industry's most powerful bosses, and how this worker movement changed Silicon Valley forever. If you're interested in why tech workers participate in labor or political activism and how they've gone about it over the past ten years, this book is for you.

JS and his co-author Clarissa Redwine have written this book because the need for tech worker organizing is more urgent than ever. Silicon Valley's ultra-rich have cozied up to the political right and formed what has been called a tech oligarchy. Meanwhile, AI is being forced upon the
industry and is transforming tech work as we know it—already it is used as pretext for layoffs across the industry. This book not only makes the case for tech workers to act, but also sets them on a path to finding their power and reviving their much-needed movement.

Yu & Me Books in dialogue w/ Amba Kak, co-director of AI Now

Amba Kak, Co-executive Director of AI Now joins JS Tan and Clarissa Redwine for the launch of their book at Yu & Me Books. Amba spent fifteen years designing and advocating for
technology policy in the public interest, across government, industry, and civil society – and in many parts of the world. She completed her term as Senior Advisor on AI at the Federal Trade Commission in 2022, and recently served as a member of New York City’s Mayor Elect Zohran
Mamdani’s transition team. In 2024 TIME magazine listed Kak among 100 most influential people in AI.

NYU in dialogue w/ Nikhil Pal Singh — Lipton Hall NYU, September 15th

Esteemed NYU professor and author, Nikhil Pal Singh, joins the authors for an engaging discussion. His first book, Black is a Country: Race and the Unfinished Struggle for Democracy, published by Harvard University Press in 2004 was recognized as the best book in US civil rights history by the Organization of American Historians. Professor Singh has been interviewed and published widely across left and progressive media, including at Jacobin’s The Dig podcast,
in the Nation, the Intercept, Dissent, and many more. His latest book, Reconstructing Democracy, is a collection of essays on US black intellectual history.

• Sam Stern (h’12) is Head of Engineering at Miter. Miter is hiring engineers of all experience levels in SF and NY. Some things about Miter:

  • Series B company, 150 employees and ~30 engineers. Engineers are mostly in SF and NY but they have some remote too.

  • They are building the operating system for modern construction. Started out with just payroll and hr but they're quickly expanding into operations, financial flows, and everything else that their customers need to build things in the real world.

  • Looking for people who are passionate and product-focused. Every engineer is full stack, every engineer talks to customers, everyone builds very big things on ambitious timelines.

  • Amazing fun and humble team that you will love when you meet them.
