[alumNY News] Which hackNY cohort has donated the most?
It’s almost time for the holidays. I hope y’all have scheduled time off and are heading into vacation mode for the last two weeks of the year. Eric and I are still hard at work, gearing up for an amazing 2025.
Fundraising Update
We’ve been running our winter fundraising since the reunion and I wanted to give y’all an update on how it’s going. Right now we’ve been hovering at 14% of all alumNY having made a donation to hackNY. We’ve got 12 days left in 2024 to close that final 11% so we can hit our goal of 1/4th of all alumNY having made a donation to hackNY. I’ve talked about how important a signal community donations are for when we try to fundraise from bigger donors, so I’m not going to reiterate that today. Instead let’s see how each class is stacking up against each other. 😆
Class rankings:
- Right now h`22, h`17 and h`14 are tied for the most donations.
- Tied in second place are the classes of h`13 and h`20.
- Third place goes to h`24, h`23, h`15 and h`12.
- Fourth is h`21, h`19, h`18 and h`16.
- And last but not least h`11 and h`10.
Extra shout out to the class of h`23 and h`24 who are still students. I’m so impressed that y’all are able to step up to make sure hackNY continues to exist for future generations. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. If you’ve already given, please encourage a classmate to join our movement. Only together, can we ensure that hackNY continues to shape the future of technology.

Community Updates
hackNight #1
Last night we hosted our first hackNight with fat cat fab lab. I was working on servos and 9DOF sensors and really appreciate all the help folks gave me. Alex Akers h`13 showed me a bunch of work they’ve been doing with their Gameboy printer setup. I am still waiting to hear back from Alex if the new 3d print solved the problems they were having. Hopefully they’ll share with us all in Slack. It was a really nice chance to catch up with y’all and I have big plans for our first event in January (Tentatively Jan 15th so save the date).
Grad School Papers Complete
Jamie Liao (our part time Operations Specialist for hackNY) submitted her term papers for grad school. First off is a paper on the effects of STEM stereotypes on middle school girls' sense of belonging (with a focus on academic consequences). Her second paper is on the impact of social media on cognitive processes (with a focus on university students). She instantly uninstalled Instagram from my phone after starting research for this paper so maybe I shouldn’t tell our amazing marketing Director Emma Tung h`23 about this one. Everyone but Emma can DM Jamie on slack if they’d like to give them a read.
Ciclovia 50 conference
Ray Berger h`18 attended the Ciclovia 50 conference (about the big weekly open street event in Bogota, Colombia) last week and met among others, the inventor of the Ciclovia, a co-founder of the CycLAvia (in LA), and Mike Lydon (the main guy behind Tactical Urbanism). They recently released a feature of OpenLibrary that shows the Wikipedia page, Wikidata page, and Google Scholar for any author on OL that has a Wikidata ID. Pretty fun stuff.
A new game from Nolan
Nolan Filter h`10 built a new game for the 7DFPS 2024 game jam game called Seaside to Side! You're a crab! You can walk sideways, look in two directions at once, shoot bubbles from your claws at incoming enemies... you know, crab things! https://calamitynolan.itch.io/seaside-to-side
Shout out to our newest High Yellow belt
Gloria Zhu h`24 sent us this photo of her belt promotion in taekwondo. Congratulations Gloria!

Résumé
Work with an alumNY
- From Calvin Chan h`14: “Super early alpha, my company Legitimate is hiring another senior full stack developer! You'll be part of a growing and talented team building the future of connected product technology (hybrid hardware + software). We work with some of the world's leading brands to pioneer the connectivity of physical products in music, fashion, sports and more.”
- Abdullah Zameek h`20 shared: “My team at Amperon (the platform/app team) is looking for a senior swe! We're doing tons of cool work in the climate tech/energy space, tons of growth potential and overall, amazing people to be around - feel free to DM!” Fun fact that Amperon was founded by Abe Stanway h`11 and Steve Gattuso h`13 from our last hire an alumNY update is going to be rejoining them back in January.
- Riley Wong h`15 just posted in general on slack as I’m writing this: “I’m organizing a residency around community applications of privacy and cryptography and would especially love to invite the hackNY community! The Community Privacy Residency is a 2-4 week residency focused on researching, co-designing, and building open-source applications for community privacy, with emphasis on Applications for Vulnerable Communities, Community Co-Design, and Privacy Infrastructure. We invite community builders, engineers, designers, cryptographers, researchers, technologists, labor organizers, journalists, members of vulnerable communities, and advocates for digital safety, bodily autonomy, privacy, and more to apply by January 7, 2025.” More info: community-privacy.github.io.
That’s it for alumNY updates this month. As always let me know if you have anything you’d like to share with our community.
Best,
Shy h`14
P.S: I’m very happy that the class of 2014 is in the lead for donations. Not to brag, but we’re a pretty great class. Hopefully no other class takes that away from me: hackny.org/support-us
